Your head is not without a body!

It's so easy to forget that our minds depend on our bodies

· Quick read

Your body counts.

Your mind, your brain, every thought, every discussion with someone, every intellectual process begins with the body.

Over a long career, I used to forget that my body wasn't just there to carry round my head! It's all too easy to do, being swept up in work, career-building, family, friends, running your household, sustaining your interests.

Health concerns about 15 years ago made me get back to doing exercise, picking up ones I enjoyed from my younger self, learning new types, and taking more care of my diet, my sleep, my general juggling with life.

I've never looked back. Which is why, if you work with me in a group or one-to-one in your leadership journey, I will always try to incorporate something physical. With your agreement (of course!) it could be something small like standing up and sitting back down, a few seated, stretching movements, or something a bit more substantial, if you wanted.

The other day, after an intense leadership training session, I had an entire group of senior civil servants doing some simple and gentle standing yoga moves. They spontaneously ended up demonstrating their moves to each other, with much humour and mutual support. The group brought lots of energy and renewed collaboration to the following session.

Movement is energising, natural and liberating. Incorporating movement helps our bodies and minds function at their best. Give it a go and see how it works for you.
