Sounding Board - metaphor or idiom?

Yeah, whatever...

· Friday Afternoon Thought

"Sounding Board" - idiom or metaphor? Frankly I don't really care either way. Grammarist says it's an idiom that has grown out of a metaphor. Wtvr.

I was today years old, though, when I found out where it comes from.

"The term “sounding board” originally referred to a structure placed above and behind a pulpit or stage to help reflect sound waves toward the audience, amplifying the speaker’s voice." (quote from Grammarist)

So, that's why pulpits and other speaking places look the way they do!

Here are some synonyms for “sounding board” from the same site:

👂 Listening ear - yep, OK

🤫 Confidant - we all need those

🪩 Reflective surface - wt??

🔉 Feedback giver - yikes

🛋️ Counsellour - corrected to UK spelling!)

🧠 ⛈️ Brainstorm buddy

Yet another quote from Grammarist (really getting to be quite the useful source...)

"Everyone needs a sounding board in life, someone to tell their wildest dreams without judgment."

Whatever your preferred term, I have a new service called Sounding Board - 30, 60 or 90 minutes, depending on the size of your dream.
